S. Korea’s National Assembly passes prosecutorial reform bill


at the National Assembly lawmakers
passed a contentious prosecutorial reform bill submitted by the so called
4+1 consultative body on Monday at the plenary session the ruling Democratic
party and minor opposition parties with the exception of the Liberty Korea party
passed a bill to establish a new investigative body that can probe
high-ranking government officials the main opposition bloc claims the proposed
agency could abuse its power to selectively launch investigations to
help the presidential office the conservative lawmakers vowed to file a
jurisdiction dispute to the Constitutional Court despite that
resistance the bill was passed by a majority of 159 votes surpassing the
threshold of at least 148 the ruling Democratic Party expects the
installation of the investigative agency to be completed by next July the TOI
they regard the passage as an historic moment and vowed to make every effort to
prevent abuse of power by the prosecution
